The story of the ‘Big Hole’ goes back to the discovery of the first diamond on the banks of the Orange River in 1866 by a young lad named Erasmus Jacobs, the son of a farmer. One day while Erasmus was out walking, he happened to look down and found a luminous stone at his feet.
